This usually requires prior visit(s) in order to acquire the recordings, photos and technical information for inclusion in the course material.

Course outline: Health, Safety and Environmental engineers or managers in the construction, demolition and infrastructure industries who need to devise and implement effective noise and vibration management programmes to meet Best Practical means (BPM) noise and vibration management requirements to minimise the likelihood of complaints from local residents.
Learning objectives and outcomes: delegates gain the knowledge and confidence to devise and implement effective noise and vibration management programmes for any site based on current best practice.

- Noise and Vibration Terminology and Basic Calculations: the fundamental noise and vibration terminology and monitoring techniques. Barrier performance, decay with distance, sound power to sound pressure, source addition
- Standards and Specifications: a brief review of the main construction noise and vibration legislation and standards: Control of Pollution Act. BS5228 parts 1, 2, 2009 for noise and vibration; Section 60, Section 61 and Section 80 with examples.
- Sound Propagation and Acoustic Materials: behaviour of sound; sound decay with distance, barriers, enclosures, sound absorption; sound insulation
- Site Noise and Vibration Management Best Practice and Best Practicable Means: public relations and discussions with EHOs; management procedures; monitoring requirements (establishing the minimum number of monitoring stations, generating reports as required by EHOs etc); operational factors; control options with case studies; innovations (acoustic camouflage, psychology)
- Practical Session: set up, calibration, logging and making use of the data from continuous monitoring systems

While this course is designed for delegates with no background knowledge in site noise and vibration, you are encouraged to forward company documentation in advance as the basis for discussion. You may also find the following tasks helpful.
- Look at what noise policy or assessments your company already has in place. By doing this, you will start to gain an idea of what improvements need to be implemented once you return to work.
- If your company has a sound level meter, try to bring it with you. This will: a) enable you to check it is suitable for noise measurements; b) you can use your own meter for any optional practical sessions.
- If you can acquire a copy of BS5228 and skim read the relevant parts of it, this is useful. In addition, review any company documentation related to site noise and vibration e.g. Section 61 templates.
